David Mejias finds beauty in dark and unusual things. He has been shooting professionally for five years, half of that time for the uber-hot ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. When he’s not taking pictures, David explores the Rocky Mountains through the two activities that keep him Colorado: rock climbing and snow boarding. He’s also become a bit of a Twitter addict. Artwork Details:
I was introduced to a friend's cousin in Indiana and his visual presence, his eyes and his amazing beard, blew me away. It was a cloudy day, so the light was soft. The composition was there, the muted colors were working. It was all there in camera, but as I looked at the image on my computer it was flat. What I decided to do was really rework the quality of light, especially the brighter and darker extremes over his face and beard. That’s why it kind of pops. It was a subtle adjusting of the image's light leveraging the pressure sensitivity of my tablet and pen.

Wacom Comments:
Maybe it's weird to describe it this way, but there's something that's natural about using a pen and tablet. When I studied photography in college, I really liked the tactile elements of the process: touching paper, adjusting the enlarger, waving my burning and dodging tools around. With the pen's pressure sensitivity and my tablet's large surface, it brings me a little closer to a tactile dark room experience.
